The Golf Society is sad to report that long-time GSA member Murray Cropley passed away on December 16th after a battle with illness.
Murray, who was 78, loved golf and golfers, and gave so much over many decades to the game he loved. He was a committee member of the Golf Society and was also active on the history collection sub-committee.
Murray was a former board member of the Victorian Golf Association and later Golf Victoria. He completed the first State Level Referees course in 1993 and was active in rules education, handicapping/course rating and the conducting of many events, especially Pennant. He refereed many matches at the highest level, including the Australian Open.
Murray was instrumental in creating the Match Tracker online database that now lists comprehensive results of Victorian men’s pennant results over many decades. (Murray and colleague Ian Rowell searched in vain for equivalent women’s pennant results from past decades). Murray was a long-standing member and former captain at Latrobe Golf Club in Melbourne.
He will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues at the Golf Society. The Society extends its deepest sympathy to Murray’s wife Lynne and family.
